I Won't Be There

Private client. Sleeve design, packaging design and art direction.

Completed 2012.

The design for this compilation of primarily post-punk (with a bit of disco thrown in) was inspired by staring at a lone, red power light in an otherwise pitch black room...

An art critic, writing on a piece by the Minimalist light artist Dan Flavin, once opined that red is the color closest to black...

There is something rather sinister about the glowing red spot, complementing the potentially angry tone of the title (taken from the New Order song "586")...

The association with standby power lights reminds one of the idea of latency, of the fact that something could be "on" or active, but currently isn't...

Correlating with the client's directive of creating artwork that subtly evokes the feeling of the break-up of a romantic relationship...

And creating an atmosphere that is dark both literally and figuratively.
